Mobility Authority Celebrates Opening of 183 Toll and 290/130 Flyovers Project with Virtual Ribbon Cutting

(Austin, Texas) — Today, the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority (Mobility Authority) Board of Directors celebrated the opening of the 183 Toll Road and 290/130 Flyovers Projects at the monthly Board of Directors meeting. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the ribbon-cutting event was held virtually in lieu of an in-person celebration.

“We are excited to deliver these critically-needed connections for Central Texas,” said Bobby Jenkins, Chairman of the Mobility Authority Board of Directors. “These projects will help transform our regional transportation network, enhancing safety and connectivity for travelers throughout the region.”

Chairman Jenkins led a short virtual ribbon-cutting event that was live streamed for the public to watch. The event highlighted each project’s history and background, and included contributions by some of the key stakeholders and elected officials who supported the projects throughout the development and construction process. “The 290/130 Flyovers Project is a perfect example of the successful partnership between the Mobility Authority and TxDOT,” said Tucker Ferguson, Austin District Engineer for the Texas Department of Transportation. “Through thoughtful planning and proactive collaboration, we’ve delivered a critical connection that will serve the region for years to come.”

In partnership with the Texas Department of Transportation, the Mobility Authority began construction in November 2018 on three flyovers at the interchange of the Mobility Authority’s 290 Toll Road and TxDOT’s SH 130 toll. The contractor was incentivized to complete the 290/130 Flyovers Project on an accelerated timeline, accounting for the early openings of the first two flyovers in 2020. The third and final flyover, a non-tolled connection linking eastbound 290 Toll and southbound SH 130, was completed in February, also months ahead of schedule. The new flyovers provide drivers safe, efficient, free-flowing direct connections between the two roadways, while also freeing up capacity at the frontage road intersection to benefit drivers who prefer the non-tolled option. The Mobility Authority broke ground on the 183 South Project in 2016 to transform US 183, one of Austin’s most congested corridors, into a modern expressway with three tolled and three non-tolled lanes in each direction, tripling the previous capacity of US 183. The previously four-lane divided highway with signal-controlled intersections was constructed in the mid-1960s and had seen only minor improvements prior to the 183 South Project. At $743 million, it is the largest roadway construction project in Central Texas since SH 130, and the largest project ever locally led. Opening of the 183 Toll Road is a major step forward in developing a comprehensive regional transportation system for Central Texas that offers greater mobility and reliable travel times.
