Tolling Begins on 183 Toll - South End
Tolling Being Phased in Over Next Month
(Austin, Texas) — Beginning as early as January 16, 2021*, the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority (Mobility Authority) will begin the phased opening of the remaining segments of the 183 Toll Road. Tolling of the northbound lanes will take place first, followed a week or two later by tolling of the southbound lanes. With the changes, tolls will be charged on the entire 8-mile length of the 183 Toll Road from SH 71 to US 290. In February, tolled flyover ramps between the 183 Toll Road and SH 71 are expected to open to traffic, marking the opening of the final tolled element of the massive $743 million project.
The 183 Toll Road will offer drivers faster access to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and other important destinations like downtown Austin. The project eliminated numerous traffic signals between US 290 and SH 71 and will allow drivers who use the new toll road to bypass the remaining traffic signals at Loyola Lane, FM 969 (Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard) and Montopolis Drive.
Drivers who do not wish to pay a toll can still use the new and improved non-tolled general-purpose lanes of US 183 by following the “Last Free Exit” signs to avoid entering the tolled lanes.
The toll rate for a full-length trip on the 8-mile 183 Toll Road will be $2.30 for drivers with an electronic tag like TxTag, TollTag or EZ-Tag. The cost to use the tolled flyover ramps between the 183 Toll Road and SH 71 will be an additional $0.59 with a tag. TxTag customers should be aware that there could be a delay in billing for tolls on the 183 Toll Road due to ongoing system upgrades at TxTag. Drivers should note that there will still be some roadway construction and other project elements to complete over the next several months. The contractor will be completing the bicycle and pedestrian facilities, travel lanes, and installing landscaping and other improvements.
