Planned Expressways

Central Texas' existing expressways are already providing much needed traffic congestion relief for drivers and more projects are being considered for our region.

The Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization's (CAMPO) Mobility 2035 Plan, Central Texas' long range transportation plan, calls for expansion and development of several critical roadways. Due to significant funding shortfalls, the Mobility Authority is working with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and CAMPO to expedite construction of these projects by borrowing money and charging tolls as a way to fund the program. Information about each planned expressway follows.

Bergstrom Expressway (183 South)

The Bergstrom Expressway will be an approximately 8-mile limited-access toll road extending from Springdale Road to Patton Avenue. It will be constructed in the median of US 183 South, with additional improvements to the entire facility. Due to funding constraints, the project will be built in stages. The initial stage will have fewer travel lanes than originally planned. The Bergstrom Expressway will be tolled, while the existing US 183 will be improved and will remain toll-free.

Existing Traffic (2005): 68,100 – 115,300 vehicles per day (TxDOT 2005)
Projected Traffic (2025): 121,900 – 204,200 vehicles per day (TxDOT)

Manchaca Expressway (45 South)

The Manchaca Expressway will be a 3.6-mile, four-lane limited access expressway on a new alignment connecting Loop 1 (MoPac) South to FM 1626 in southern Travis County.

US 290 West and SH 71 West Improvements

The Mobility Authority is working with TxDOT, Travis
County, and the City of Austin on improvements at the US 290 "Y" in Oak Hill. A TxDOT study is currently underway to look at a short-term fix (10 year or less) that would improve traffic flow at intersections in the area. The Mobility Authority continues to work with area transportation partners to find a permanent solution to traffic congestion that plagues the area.
