The expressways currently open in Central Texas are already providing much needed traffic congestion relief for area drivers and more projects are being considered for our region.
The Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization’s (CAMPO) Mobility 2030 Plan, Central Texas’ long range transportation plan, calls for expansion of several critical roadways at a cost of more than $2.5 billion. Due to significant funding shortfalls, the Mobility Authority is working with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and CAMPO to expedite construction of these projects by borrowing money and charging tolls as a way to fund the program.
In October 2007, CAMPO approved a scaled back package of projects with a projected cost of $1.5 billion.
Bergstrom Expressway
Overview
The Bergstrom Expressway, is an approximately 8-mile limited-access toll road extending from Springdale Road to Patton Avenue. It will be constructed in the median of US 183 South, with additional improvements to the entire facility. Due to funding constraints, the project will be built in stages. The initial stage will have fewer travel lanes than originally planned. The Bergstrom Expressway will be tolled, while the existing US 183 will be improved and will remain toll-free. The project could be under construction by 2015.
Existing Traffic
2005: 68,100 - 115,300 vehicles per day
(TxDOT 2005)Projected Traffic 2025: 121,900 - 204,200 vehicles per day
(TxDOT)
Toll Payment Options
Tolls on the Bergstrom Expressway will be collected using
TxTag or a process known as
Pay By Mail. Cash will not be accepted. There will be no traditional toll booths, meaning drivers will not have to slow down or stop to pay the toll. Toll rates will not be determined until the project is financed. However, toll rates should be consistent with toll rates found on other toll roads in Central Texas.
Manchaca Expressway
Overview
The Manchaca Expressway will be a 3.6-mile, four-lane limited access road on a new alignment connecting Loop 1 (MoPac) South to FM 1626 in southern Travis County. The expressway will be tolled with one non-tolled lane proposed in each direction. Construction could begin in 2015.
